About
Ema Grčman is a young, enthusiastic and versatile cellist from Ljubljana, Slovenia.
As a passionate chamber musician, she has performed at several renowned music festivals in Slovenia and abroad such as the Stift Festival in the Netherlands, Enescu Festival, Tartini Festival, Ljubljana Festival, Steirische Kammermusikfestival and Davos Festival. Ema has wide ranging musical interests and has performed across various genres, from classical and jazz to folk and contemporary music. She has performed specialised concerts for children and has also cultivated an active role in the contemporary music scene, performing within diverse ensembles across Europe.
Ema’s most memorable performances include a debut in Ljubljana where she performed the famous double concerto by Johannes Brahms with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. That same year, she was selected as a member of the Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein chamber orchestra. In the season 2019/2020, Ema gained extra orchestral experience as substitute in the orchestra of Oper Graz as well as in the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Since 2021 she is also a member of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic Orchestra and the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra.
Her early music education took place in Slovenia, followed by Bachelor Studies in Croatia in the class of prof. Valter Dešpalj. In 2020 she graduated with distinction at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in Austria in the class of prof. Julian Arp. Ema continued her master studies in Scandinavia with the renowned cello soloist Prof. Torleif Thedéen. Currently she is living in Basel, Switzerland, where she is pursuing her Master’s degree in Musipedagogy in the class of prof. Thomas Demenga.
She has taken part in several masterclasses with established pedagogues and has collaborated with prominent musicians such as Hugo Ticciati, Pieter Wispelwey, Marc Coppey, Thomas Carrol, Isabelle van Keulen, Daniel Hope, Daniel Rowland, Eberhard Feltz, Johannes Meissl, Danjulo Ishizaka and many others. She is also a prize winner of national and international competitions where she competed mostly as a soloist but also in chamber music ensembles. Some of her concerts in Slovenia were also recorded by the national radio of Slovenia. As a chamber musician she is also collaborating with Jeunesses Musicales Slovenia and the Jeunesses Musicales Ljubljana.
Lately she has been collaborating with musicians in the free improvisation scene, across genres and art disciplines and is very passionate about contemporary music.
Ema plays on an instrument made by Paulus Pilat from 1928.
